Santa Fe Wine Festival

The Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta celebrates its twentieth year from September 22 to 26, 2010, with cooking demonstrations, tastings, classes, and meals prepared by acclaimed chefs. Visitors can sign up for a variety of meals in historic destinations in the area, including a luncheon and tour at the Georgia O’Keeffe House. | SAVVY TRAVEL TIP |
Rainy Days
If you are planning on sunny days at all times when on vacation, think again. You need to prepare for those rainy days or inclement weather, especially if you are traveling with the family. Do your research ahead of time and have a "Plan B" wherever you go and you will have a great time, no matter what the weather. Museums are the obvious place to go when it rains, so have a few picked out. In the theme parks, go to the indoor shows and quickly head outside after it rains while others are still inside to beat the lines. Bad weather at the beach? Have activity kits available at your hotel or visit the indoor pool until the sky clears. Don’t leave home without preparing for bad weather, and you’ll be glad whether it rains or not.

The Blue Ridge Parkway: Preserving an American Treasure

The Blue Ridge Parkway, a quintessential American treasure celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2010, is in need of protection these days. Travelers have enjoyed the fabulous vistas along the 469-mile, two-lane scenic roadway for decades, but few knew that only a part of the area adjacent to the parkway is public land. The rest is privately owned, and may be open to development. Efforts, including a bill before Congress, are underway to prevent the roadway from losing the scenery that has kept travelers coming to visit for decades. Four national parks stretching from Virginia to North Carolina, plus countless private sections, make up the scenery that is ultimately one of the country’s greatest assets. Visit the area by car, take your camera and stay a while along the way to enjoy the best America has to offer. Details on exploring the region are available at www.blueridgeparkway.org.

Coda
If you are in the mood for a little jazz, a fun atmosphere and casual, eclectic dining, head right to Coda, a supper club located at the edge of the Mission District. The menu is filled with American fare, appetizers to please and enough variety to keep everyone happy. Locals come here for the excellent local wines, which are half price from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and the great nightly jazz. There isn’t a bad seat in the house, which consists of a high, wood-beamed ceiling and slate floors, to enjoy the music and the cuisine (1710 Mission Street; 415-551-2632; www.codalive.com). |
