A New Manta Experience

Hawaii’s Big Island offers a brand-new experience for the adventurous–scuba-diving and snorkeling with manta in Manta Village, a water experience 25 feet below the surface in Keauhou Bay. On board the Hula Kai, a 55-foot Technicraft power catamaran, certified divers can witness the graceful sea creatures in a two-and-a-half-hour session (up to six divers) with snorkelers floating from above as the manta feed on plankton. For reservations and more information visit www.fair-wind.com. This family-owned operation has been around for 37 years, offering snorkeling, diving and whale watching excursions along the Kona Coast. |

| SAVVY TRAVEL TIP |
Think Small

Packing for a trip should start with a small suitcase, preferably a rolling carry-on, since we tend to fill the space that is allotted. Use every inch of the bag by tucking socks into shoes, rolling up quick-dry underwear and choosing an interchangeable wardrobe. Avoid taking bulky sweaters and choose thin wool ones instead, and go for microfiber pants that take less room and don’t
wrinkle.

King Pacific Lodge: Sustainable Tourism

Princess Royal Island, BC—There is adventure travel and then there is absolutely unique adventure travel. A floating fishing lodge (yes, floating) offers the experience of a lifetime with access to the best fishing and pristine wilderness in northern British Columbia. Add to that the sustainable tourism credo at this unusual eco-resort and you have a really special vacation. King Pacific Lodge has a front row seat to the Great Bear Rainforest, the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world, as well as the opportunities to try your hand at freshwater fly-fishing, sea kayaking, heli-hiking, heli-sightseeing, and animal sightings. Luxurious spa amenities have garnered the Lodge a top rating in the recent Conde Nast Traveler survey, but the guided wilderness adventures and careful stewardship of the land gather just as much praise. Local Indian tribes are a big part of the story here. The Lodge, a Rosewood Resort, welcomes guests from May through October. Check out the three, four, and seven-night packages at www.kingpacificlodge.com.

Jaleo
Authentic Spanish tapas, some 60 different hot and cold varieties, are on offer at Jaleo, where Jose Andres directs the menu. In Spanish, Jaleo means “uproar, revelry, merry-making” and that aptly describes the atmosphere of this popular casual, yet upscale restaurant. With Downtown, Bethesda and Crystal City locations, each venue offers a mix of Spanish “little plates” as well as Spanish wines. Happy Hour is popular and fun from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; pre-theater dinners are now offered at the same time on theater nights (480 Seventh Street, NW; 202-628-7949; www.jaleo.com).
